It’s been almost 6 months since I came to The United States of America. I came here on a project assignment and currently working with a very reputed International Government Organization in Washington, DC. A capitalistic country as they say, USA is in fact a very nice place to live where they value people and treat everyone with respect.
While working here, I made a lot of friends in last six months from varied nationalities, ethnicity and speaking different languages. People come to work here from all over the world. It’s fun to work with such a diverse set of people as you get a lot of value from their experiences and the diverse cultures they come from.
Just like my work-team, I also happened to make a few lunch buddies with whom I enjoy having lunch every day. We discuss about a lot of topics over lunch, except for work related things, of course. One day, one of our friends was looking noticeably very happy. When I asked her for the reason, she said with a smile on her face “My husband is travelling to India”. I was not amazed. That was pretty much a valid reason after all. Hahaha!
However, what she said next grabbed my attention. She said her husband was going to India for a special reason. It was his mother’s 60th birthday and he wanted to surprise her by appearing in front of her on the day without she being aware of it. His plan was to fly all the way to India from USA just to meet his mom on her special day and see the joy in her eyes after she sees him unexpectedly.
He had planned his visit well in advance and by taking his brother and sister in confidence. He surely must have spent fortune on flight tickets and all other travel plans just for a week’s travel to India. When he went there last week, his sister recorded the entire video of this special moment on her phone. Their mother could not contain her joy after seeing her son. That video, when he shared with us, brought tears of happiness in our eyes.
Of course, people say money cannot buy happiness, but money can facilitate you to do things that bring happiness in your lives. I don’t say that wealthy people are happier than poor people, but money when used correctly can bring the smile on your face. World is a strange place. People say that money brings evil, still everybody wants to earn money. Just like a knife is not good or bad by itself, but it depends on the bearer whether she uses it for cooking or killing. The same way, money is not evil. It’s just the way we use it which decides its nature. And I believe that we should always aim for earning more money so that we can bring happiness to more and more people in our society starting with ourselves, why not?
Do you have such an experience in your life when you spent money in such a way that brought a ton of happiness to your dear ones or anyone for that matter? Please share it below in comments, I would love to hear that.
