After a long weekend, I woke up next day little tired and said to myself,
“Not again, I don’t want to go to office”.
Do you feel the same way after every weekend or a long vacation? Do you always feel like this every Monday morning? Well, all of us have Monday blues. Given the choice, I would take a leave every Monday (or every single day if that’s possible somehow).
I have an IT job and when I joined as a fresh computer science graduate around 11 years back, things were little different. I was excited to go to office every day because I loved computers, I loved coding and I loved free coffee from the coffee machine. And on top of that I was getting paid every single month. Then what happened suddenly that I no longer LIKE to go to office but I HAVE TO?
I feel that the reason is simple – people in my age group have more responsibilities, they have families to feed, bills to pay, EMI’s on home loan, car loan, personal loan and the list is endless. Your salary has grown manifold in last few years, but so did inflation and no matter how much you earn today, that’s not enough to fulfill all your needs based on your current lifestyle, isn’t it? And then you feel stuck. You cannot leave your job because you are earning money to maintain your current lifestyle but at the same time you don’t feel like going to office because you no longer enjoy what you do that you have been doing for last several years.
Few years ago, when I was talking to my office colleagues-cum-friends, one of them said something that caught my immediate attention. He said that some XYZ company’s IPO is coming in the market. I was aware of these terms like IPO, stock market, shares etc. but never understood anything deeper than just knowing the jargon. I thought there are many people out there who are actively involved in the stock market, trading, investing and making money. It looks so fascinating and I should know more about it very soon otherwise I will feel left behind.
My first and obvious resort was the Internet. I started to google around about the stock market and visited many websites. But those websites were too clumsy and noisy for a beginner like me to understand anything. I was not able to make sense of anything on those websites. I kept on searching for few more resources but to no avail. What I was looking for was something or someone who could hold my hand and guide me step by step on entering the ocean called Stock Market. I was very much curious about it but at the same time I was also little afraid and was thinking to myself,
- Is it the right time for me to jump into the Stock Market?
- I have no finance background. How will I manage to understand all financial jargon?
- I do not have a lot of money to invest. How will I trade or invest money in the Stock Market?
- Stock Market is risky. I cannot afford to lose a lot of money in Stock Market. My friends will laugh at me if that happens. What will my parents say?
- I have a full-time job and I don’t have time to follow the market the entire day.
The Turning Point of Our Life:
One Friday night, I remember I was sitting in a fine restaurant in Mumbai (my city of birth and financial capital of India), chatting and having good time with my friends. After a couple of drinks, one my friends came up with the Stock Market topic. Since I was continuously thinking about Stock Market for last few weeks, he got my immediate attention. We were three of us and to my surprise we all were in the same boat. I never knew that these guys were also equally interested in making money from Stock Market. Our thought was clear and we all agreed on one point that “We will not invest any money in the Stock Market blindly. We will first learn the rules of the game before playing it”.
But, the question was who will teach us everything about this risky stuff that we want to learn? And to our surprise, our friend Rahul came up with the answer. He mentioned that his uncle is a Stock Market trader himself for last 10+ years and he conducts classes on this topic. I literally jumped with joy as if I had found a gold mine. The very next moment, we all were beating up Rahul for not telling this earlier when he already knew that his uncle himself can be our guide on this journey. We decided right there that we’ll attend this Stock Market learning course at the earliest possible. Little did we know at that time that this decision was going to be a turning point in our life. Our dinner ended with a sparkling joy in our eyes and some alcohol in our blood streams.
After few days from this Friday night, Rahul called me one fine day and told that the course on Stock Market that he mentioned earlier has been scheduled over the weekend and we’ll have to travel to Pune (Mumbai’s sister city) to attend the same. I instantly agreed and started my preparation for travel and stay in Pune.
Yes, Miracles Happen
What happened next was indeed like a miracle for me and here I am today fully equipped with basic knowledge of stock market and ready to trade. It may seem little exaggeration but that one course changed the direction of my life. Since then, it has been around 5 years we have been trading and earning decent money in the Stock Market. What seemed like a black box to me 5 years ago is something that I do on daily basis now. All my fear of Stock Market has evaporated.
I still do not have any finance background. In fact, none of us have. I am from IT background and my two partners are from Statistics and Media background respectively. Nevertheless, we manage to trade successfully. We have been trading for so many years and we did not lose all the invested money since we learned and followed strict risk management techniques to protect our capital. We still don’t spend the entire day following stocks and looking at news. We hardly spend few hours per day to study as per our own developed trading strategies and few minutes to ACTUALLY trade in the Stock Market. So, if you are at the edge of entering the Stock Market and in the same position that I was in few years back then look at me. I and my partners are living examples of transformation from zero knowledge to our own profitable trading setup.
I know what you are thinking now. You may be thinking – “OK, that worked for you. You were lucky. What if it does not work for me?”. Well buddy, luck favors to only those who try. What is the worst that can happen? It really may not work for you. In that case, you can get back and continue doing whatever you’ve been doing so far and you would not regret because you at least tried. But just think, “What if it works?”. Will your life be easier if you have a second stream of income from Stock Market along with your primary income from job? Will that give you more financial backup in today’s unsteady job market? Will it give you confidence to leave your job eventually and give you freedom to pursue other interesting and important things in life that you always dreamed of?
What do you think? Write in the comments below. I would love to hear from you.
